UNIT 1

Study the main rules of English pronunciation.

The main terms of the unit: articulation basis, tongue, lips, tense and bulky, movable, spread position, neutral position, flat articulation, forelingual consonant, tongue-tip, alveoli, teeth, hard consonant, palatalized consonant, voiced consonant, weak consonant, plosive voiceless consonant, aspiration

ARTICULATION BASIS OF ENGLISH

The main points of difference between the articulation basis of English and Russian / Ukrainian are as follows:

1. The tongue in English is more tense and bulky.

2. The lips are also tenser and less movable. They are mostly spread or neutral (flat articulation).

3. Forelingual English consonants are articulated with the tongue-tip against the alveoli, or against the teeth.

4. All English consonants are hard, except for [ l, j ] and have no palatalized oppositions.

5. The English word-final voiced consonants must not be devoiced, yet they are weak.

6. The English plosive voiceless / p, t, k / are pronounced with aspiration.

Study the rules for the following consonants and practice them in proverbs.

a) / m / Graphical rules: 1. “m”, “mm” - mean, summer; 2. “mb”, “mn” - comb, autumn; 3. “lm” after ”a” – calm. Proverbs and sayings: 1. To make a mountain out of a molehill. 2. Never marry for money, but marry where money is. 3. The more the merrier. b) / n / Graphical rules: 1. “n”, “nn” - not, sunny; 2. “kn”, “gn”, “pn” - gnaw, knife, pneumonia. Proverbs and sayings: 1. If you pay peanuts you get monkey. 2. A penny saved is a penny earned. 3. He who never climbed never fell.
c) / ŋ / Graphical rules: 1. “ng” - sing; 2. “nk” - thank you. Proverbs and sayings: 1. Seeing is believing. 2. A new language a new world. 3. Hammer and tongs d) / g / Graphical rules: 1. “g”, “gg” - garden, giggle; 2. “gh” - ghost; 3. “gu” + vowel - guess, guard; 4. “x” / gz / in intervocalic position – exam. Proverbs and sayings: 1. Bag and baggage. 2. As ugly as a sin. 3. To kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Find the Ukrainian equivalents for the proverbs, choose 2-3 of them to explain.

a) Climb, tomb, column, common, balm, psalm, ham, sums, smoke, improbable, memorise;

b) funny, knelt, knowledge, knock, knot, pneumatic, pneumatology, unreal, pence, often;

“So, we’ll go no more a roving…”

By George Gordon Noel Byron

So, we’ll go no more a roving

So late into the night,

Though the heart be still as loving,

And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,

And the soul wears out the breast,

And the heart must pause to breathe,

And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,

And the day returns too soon,

Yet we’ll go no more a roving

By the light of the moon.

6. Answer the questions for self-control:

1. What positions of lips are used in articulation of English sounds?

2. What consonants are aspirated in English?

3. What English consonants can be considered as palatalized?

4. How do we pronounce voiced consonants in word-final positions?
