Cherkasy Attractions




The centre of Cherkasy region is the city of Cherkasy. Its population is about 300 thousand people. There are several explanations of the name, and one of them says that in many historical documents the two words “cherkassy” and “cossacks” had the same meaning “free horsemen”. And really - the whole history of the town is inseparable from the history of Ukrainian Cossacks.

What are the first impressions of the city and what are its main highlights ?

Cherkasy impresses everybody with pleasant wide boulevards and scenic river vistas, most of its central walkways are lined with chestnut trees. Not far from the central square is an elegant building of local Music and Drama Theatre. One should visit the Museum of local lore that houses 12,000 exhibits. Here you can find many interesting items about the heroic past of Cherkasy. Among the attractions of the city there are the Cherkasy Art Museum, Monument to the legendary Old Rus bard Boyan in the 700th Anniversary of Cherkassy Square.

The history of Cherkasy is closely connected with the names of two great Ukrainians – Bogdan Khmelnitsky and Taras Shevchenko. The monuments to them are real masterpieces of art.

Everybody visiting Cherkassy can’t miss a visit of the Glory Hill with an impressive Motherland monument. The monument honours the men and women who lost their lives defending the city from the Nazi invasion.

Not far there is the Church of the Holy Trinity. There is also a Roman-Catholic chapel. On August 13, 2002, the biggest in Ukraine Orthodox St. Archangel Michael’s Cathedral that can house 12,000 people was unveiled.

While visiting Cherkasy one can take a trip to Kaniv which is famous for Chernecha Hill, where the great Taras Shevchenko was reburied; to Chygyryn the former residence of Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky. One should also visit Subotiv, the village where the museum of Bogdan Khmelnitsky is located. Moryntsi is another tourist attraction in Cherkasy region. In this small village the great Ukrainian poet, artist and democrat Taras Shevchenko was born. A small town of Kamyanka is famous for its museum of prominent and distinguished Russian composer Pyotr Chaikovsky. His life and creative work were connected with Ukraine. And probably the most popular tourist destination is Uman, famous for its beautiful landscape park "Sofievka” that was laid out by Count Stanislav Pototski, the landlord of numerous estates in Ukraine. It was named in honour of his wife Sophia.

Every person, who has visited our region at least once, will have a wish to derive pleasure from the Dnipro-Slavutych, the aroma of blooming gardens, feel the spirit of generous and hospitable Cherkashchyna.
