WHO’S AFRAID OF THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER?

Jon, Peter and George were best friends. They met when they were very young and became inseparable. In fact, they were such good friends that they became affectionately known as the 'Three Musketeers'. And yet, they couldn't have been more different. Jon was an accomplished athlete. He played basketball so well that he was chosen to play in the school team. Peter, on the other hand, was the brainy one. He was such a good student that all his teachers held him up as an example to his friends. George was the funny one. He was so charming that everybody wanted to be his friend. As they grew older, however, they began to drift apart. George often got annoyed when people admired Jon, Jon got angry when teachers talked about Peter's excellent results; and Peter got fed up with girls being friendly to him hoping he would introduce them to George.

What went wrong? Their friendship was clearly struck by the green-eyed monster. We have all experienced jealousy at some point in our lives. Have you ever felt just a little bit jealous of your friend's popularity? Do you never, ever feel the tiniest bit annoyed when your parents make a fuss of your sister's accomplishments? And how did you feel when your best friend invited another friend to the cinema instead of you? Don't worry if you have at times felt jealous: jealousy is not only a normal feeling, it can also be positive! The origin of the word itself is a clue: jealousy comes from the Greek word «zelos», the desire to do as well or better than another person. It can encourage you to become as good as those you admire so much.

So, make jealousy work for you:

Watch those you admire. If you're jealous of your friend's superb tennis playing, watch him/her and try to improve yours.

Develop your own qualities. Your friend has such long, straight hair that she could be in a shampoo advertisement! Yours is short and curly. Trying to imitate her in this case can only lead to disappointment. Instead, make a list of your own qualities and develop them. Soon, people will admire you for more than just beautiful hair.

Don't worry too much about what others think of you. At school work for yourself, not just to please your teachers and other students. Don't spoil the pleasure of your achievements because of too much jealousy of the successes of other people.

Talk about your feelings. If you feel your parents pay much more attention to your brother or sister, don't just sit angrily in a corner. Instead, tell them calmly how you feel.

Learn to 'share' your friends. You can't expect your best friend to be your friend only. Be happy that your best friend is popular with other people but that he/she has chosen you as his/her special friend. And anyway, while your best friend is out with other people he/she probably can't wait to share his/her experiences with you!

Remember: jealousy can be like the wind a refreshing breeze or a destructive hurricane.
