Project:From the early 1980s, people moved to city getting a job followed by Korean industrialization. While parents were working outside till the late of the night, children had not fully cared by their parents from security, nutrition and education. Unfortunately most of them are disadvantaged financially. Due to the reason, religious institution started the services for children those who needed good hands. This is beginning of the Local Children Center. In 2004, those places were recognized as an official place as a shelter of the children who are in needs, under the law. And it has been partly supported by government. However, financial support from the government is still quite limited. The Local Children Center operates by local church. The center has many children who are growing up in families with one parent, or grandparents. The center provides children not only a shelter so that children could protect them until their parents come but also educational and cultural opportunities so that children can open up a door to a new experience. Most of them have fewer opportunities meeting foreigners, so with the help of international volunteers, the local children can experience global awareness while volunteers can feel the warmth and kindness of this rural Korean community.

Yeongwol gun is surrounded by mountains and long river. ItЎЇs farming and nature area. There are many working parents till late at night under the poor economical condition. Due to the reason, the local youth do not have many opportunities to be involved with international people. In this respect, this project will play an important role in bringing a taste of international culture to the local children and people. The center rebuilt from old school and now it has enough facilities to care of many children as an after school. There is a big play ground, kitchen, classroom and big volunteersЎЇ room designed by professional.

Work:

Teaming up with a Korean volunteer, you are asked to Ў¦.

- Take care of children while they are in the center.(Give your hands to hard working teacher at center)

- Prepare and run English class. (2~3 classes a day)

: Teaching English to primary school students and middle school students will be your main task. Their level of English is mostly basic except some of middle school students. So they are lack of confidence and interest in English. However, children started to be closed with English, thanks to foreign volunteers from last November. You will be a good present for them. J

If you have any special skill, you can also lead activity class with children. (Music, drawing,,)

Sometimes, you are asked to join weekend activities with children on Saturday; go to the cinema, mountain. Volunteers work from Monday to Friday (from 2 to 9 pm, mostly).

Teaching Information:

-Age & Number of students: 8 to 16 years old & 10 to30 children at an LCC

-Number of Teachers: 1 to 3 teachers

Extra activities:

Feel free to visit the surrounding Gangwon area, participate in various local festivals, experience Korean mountain climbing, and visit nearby historical sites. There is famous liver named Jucheon, surrounded by mountain. If you are nature lover, Yeongwol is the place for you!!
