A). Read and translate the following text. Describe the patient in shock.

The following is the description of shock made by the famous surgeon N. Pirogov: “You see a wounded soldier without an arm or leg lying still at the dressing station: he does not cry or moan or complain, but is indifferent to everything and does not ask for anything: his eyes are immovable and he gazes into the distance, his body being cold and his face pale as those of a corpse. His pulse is like a tread, barely noticeable. His wound and skin are almost completely insensitive, the patient displaying a sign of sensation only by contraction of the facial muscles. Sometimes this state passes off within a few hours, and sometimes it persists unchanged until death.”

 

 

Exercise 13. Translate the sentences into Russian paying attention to Complex Subject and Complex Object:

1. Blood transfusion is stated to be effective in acute anemia and shock.

2. Antibiotics and fluids are considered to be the most effective preparations in treatment of septic shock.

3. Shock is known to be divided into several types.

4. The patient seems to complain of severe hypersensitivity and allergy to medications in anaphylactic shock.

5. Neurogenic shock is expected to be treated with experimental drugs in the nearest future.

6. Everybody knows shock to cause such complications as hypoxia, heart attack, and various organs damage.

7. The students watched the physician take the patient’s blood pressure.

8. A patient with tuberculosis is known to complain of profuse cold perspiration at night.

9. The patient felt the pain vary in its intensity and duration.

10. Some diseases are known to be difficult to differentiate in early stages.

1. A previous attack of a certain infectious disease produces a more or less permanent protection against subsequent infection.

2. The lesions of vital organs may result in a fatal outcome.

3. While the patient was gradually recovering from severe allergic reaction to medications he noted the appearance of spastic pains in the abdomen.

4. Many scientists consider the artificial heart to be more effective than the transplanted one.

5. The failure of blood supply of the lower extremities may cause the inflammation of blood vessels.

6. Patients are X-rayed to reveal impairments in some inner organs.

7. The patient with pneumonia is administered either streptomycin injections or penicillin injections.

8. The general condition of the patient has become better however some impairments of the blood supply of the left lower extremity still persist.

9. Being administered intramuscular injections of streptomycin the patient was relieved of a sharp chest pain and productive cough within two weeks.

10. The morbidity to colds is caused by hypersensitivity or decreased resistance of the body to microorganisms and dust particles in the atmosphere.
