v Genealogy involves the collection of the names of relatives and establishing the relationships among them based on primary, secondary and/or circumstantial evidence or documentation, thus building up a cohesive family tree.

v Genealogy is often also referred to as family history and these terms may be used interchangeably.

v Genealogists attempt to understand only where and when people lived.

v From the very beginning, genealogy dealt with the ancestry of rulers and nobles, often arguing or demonstrating the legitimacy of claims to wealth and power.

v The main activity in the genealogist’s work is to interview living relatives as to who and where their children and grandchildren are.
