Герундий (the Gerund)

Герундий является неличной формой глагола, обладающей свойствами как глагола, так и существительного. Он образуется так же как и Particle I, путем прибавления суффикса –ing к основе глагола.

Герундий имеет следующие формы:

Герундий обладает следующими свойствами глагола:

а) имеет залоговые и видовые формы: Indefinite Gerund обычно употребляется для выражения действия, одновременного с действием сказуемого в предложении, а Perfect Gerund употребляется для выражения действия, которое предшествует действию, выраженному сказуемым в предложении,

б) может принимать прямое дополнение,

в) может определяться наречием.

Герундий обладает следующими свойствами существительного:

а) перед герундием может стоять существительное в общем или притяжательном падеже или местоимение,

б) герундию может предшествовать предлог,

в) герундий в предложении выполняет те же синтаксические функции, что и существительное, и может быть: подлежащим, именной частью сказуемого, дополнением, определением и обстоятельством.

В функциях обстоятельства и правого определения герундий всегда употребляется с предлогом, что отличает герундий от причастия в этих функциях.

В функции левого определения герундий отличается от причастия только в смысловом отношении, и разница между ними, а следовательно и правильный перевод, определяется контекстом.

Пример: His working place is always in order. Перевод: Его рабочее место всегда в порядке. (working – герундий)

Сравним: The working engine is in the next room. Работающий двигатель находится в соседнем помещении (working – причастие).

Так как в русском языке нет формы, соответствующей английскому герундию, то при переводе на русский язык ему надо найти соответствующие эквиваленты. Герундий может переводиться:

1) существительным

Пример: Adding heat to a substance does not always cause a rise of its temperature. Перевод: Добавление тепла веществу не всегда вызывает повышение его температуры.

2) неопределенной формой глагола

Пример: I like translating technical books from English into Russian. Перевод: Я люблю переводить технические книги с английского языка на русский.

3) деепричастием

Пример: Heat may be produced by burning coal, gas or any other fuel. Перевод: Тепло можно получить, сжигая уголь, газ или любое другое топливо.

4) глаголом в личной форме в роли сказуемого в составе придаточного предложения. Так переводятся обычно сложные формы герундия.

Пример: They were proud of having attained such outstanding results. Перевод: Они были горды тем, что добились таких выдающихся результатов.

В функции левого определения герундий переводится существительным или, реже, прилагательным.

Пример: Sliding friction and rolling friction are both examples of friction force.

Перевод: Трение скольжения и трение качения оба являются примерами силы трения.
