Teaching pronanciation

Discussion tasks:

1. How can pronunciation lessons be integrated into language
learning?

2. How would you teach intonation, rhythm and stress in English?

3. How would you motivate learners to acquire good pronunciation
in English?

Observation tasks:

1. Identify the stages of pronunciation lesson and types of activities used for its practising.

2. How was teaching pronunciation integrated into vocabulary/ structure work? Into reading and listening and reading comprehension lessons?

I am only three,

You lazy, hungry crocodile.

No, I cannot eat you.

I am so hungry.

Get away from me,

said the crocodile. Jip the cat went away over the bridge. Then Pat and Ken came along. Look out. Look out. Look at the crocodile,, said the Ken. Oh, stop, stop, stop,

said the crocodile. I am so hungry. How old are you, Ken? Look at me. You can see.

That I am seven years old,

said Ken. Seven years old. Grrrrrr. Go away, Ken. How old are you, Pet?

said the crocodile. Look at me. You can see

that I am six years old. You cannot eat me. Six years old. Grrrnr. Go away, Pat. Then Ken and Pat

said to the crocodile, Go away, croc, croc, croc. Go back to the water. Go back under the bridge. Look for your dinner. Look for fish. Look for rats. Look for snakes.

n Q г Do not be so lazy.

Look for your dinner all day

and go to sleep in the night. Grrrrrr, said the crocodile. • You are right, Ken and Pat. . ' I will eat all of them.

Then he went away . і і

into the water, under the bridge.

VI. The teacher tells the story again. This time the pupils help
with the sound effects, familiar words, phrases which occur in the text
several times.

VII. The teacher tells the story together with the pupils.

VIII. Some pupils dramatize the story. The audience prompts if nec-
essary.

DC. The pupils tell the story one-by-one and the rest of the children help with sound effects and sentences in the Imperative Mood.

Some of the proposed activities can be done over a period of several lessons. To follow communicative approach, we have to go beyond structure practising in the course of the lesson. Thus, at the further lessons the learners will be able to speak and ask about their age. Constructions in the Imperative Mood may be related to giving instructions and playing games.
