Hotel Staff

A majority of the jobs in hotels have one common feature – contact with the public, including both the positive and negative aspects of dealing with ordinary human beings. Everyone realizes that hotel work is team work and he must play his part if the guests are to enjoy their stay and come again.

At the head of the hotel there is General Manager. He runs the hotel and controls the whole work of it and insures that the hotel is profitable.

In the hall of any hotels there is a Hall porter. “The man with the golden keys” has a number of responsibilities: he greets the visitors, hands all guests their keys on arrival and will collect the same keys on departure of the guests; he gives the guests all sorts of information in several languages; he is supposed to be able to solve any guests’ problem; he will book seats for the guests at the theatre or at the concert, and do his best to satisfy every wish.

The Door Attendant is in permanent attendance at the door. When a taxi or private car stops in front of the hotel, he opens the door and helps the visitor out. If it rains, he will shelter the guest under a huge umbrella.

The Luggage Boy deals with the luggage. He takes all the pieces of luggage out of the taxi or car, places them on a luggage cart and carries them to the guest’s room.

The Bell-Boysare the “Jacks-of-all-trades” of the hall. They provide all sorts of services: deliver messages, buy newspapers, perfumes, medicines or cigarettes and others.

Receptionoffice is the nerve-center of the hotel. Therefore, the receptionist has a very special role to play in the establishment. Receptionist is expected to be tactful, diplomatic, and capable of dealing with the public. Receptionist has to receive and welcome guests, check - in and register guests, check - out guests and deal with the settlement of their accounts, handle enquiries and complaints and provide information, deal with reservations, allocate rooms, etc.

A room-maidwill have a section of between 12-15 rooms to clean and serve every day. The maid may also be asked to clean extra rooms and for this she will receive additional payment.

A Floor Supervisoris responsible for the standard of cleanliness and maintenance of rooms. This means that she has the responsibility for the work of room-maids. Usually, each room is checked twice, the first time, as soon as possible after the guest’s departure and again, after servicing.

An Executive Housekeeper is a member of the management team and is fully responsible for the standard of cleanliness and maintenance in the rooms, the staff, stock and equipment, the preparation of estimates and the control of the budget.

Every job is important, whatever it is, and calls for responsible people to carry it out.
