Контекст - лингвистическое окружение слова, и в зависимости от этого окружения слово приобретает то или иное значение. Например, если в тексте описывается компьютер, то слово клавиатура не будет ассоциироваться с музыкальным инструментом, а мышка не представится в виде небольшого грызуна с острой мордочкой и длинным хвостом. One of the most difficult hurdles facing multinational companies is the language barrier. But software companies face an extremely unusual challenge with the Japanese language because of its complex alphabet. English uses only 26 letters. The Japanese written language uses over 6,000 separate symbols. Also, it takes twice as much memory and storage space to hold each Japanese character as it does to hold each English character.

The difficulties of translating such a complex language into computerese have been both a help and a hindrance to the Japanese computer market. Their software market has developed slowly because the first computers used English ASCII code . But the Japanese have been way ahead in graphics displays, largely because of the problems associated With displaying complex characters clearly.

13 Перевод английских слов, не имеющих непосредственных лексических соответствий в русском языке

У многих английских слов нет прямых соответствий -среди русских лексических единиц. Это относится к неологизмам, к словам, выражающим специфические понятия и реалии, и к малая—at—и именам и названиям.

Для перевода таких слов в распоряжении переводчика имеете* ряд специальных приемов.

Перевод английского слова при помощи переводчооиом транскрипции и транслитерации

Переводческая транскрипция — это фонетическая ичжтвоня исходного слова. Транслитерация — формальное побуквеиное воссоздание исходной лексической единицы с помощью алфавита переводящего языка, буквенная имитация формы исходного слова. 1фи помощи переводческой транскрипции принято переводить имема. названия народов и племен, географические названия, нничеиоиалмя деловых учреждений, компаний, фирм, периодических изданий, названия-имена спортивных команд, устойчивых групп музыкантов, культурных объектов, а также термины.

Например:

1. Все редуцированные гласные передаются орфографически, т.е. Boston /bnstan/ - Бостон. Исключение составляет окончание -

mouth /тэв/ в названиях городов, которые передаются как - мут, Plymouth - Плимут, Portsmouth - Портсмут.

2. Удвоенные согласные передаются: а) между гласным и :Bonners Ferry - Боннере Ферри. б) в конце слов после гласных: - Churchill -Черчилль; boss - босс. Не передаются перед и после согласных: Seattle - Сиэтл.

3. Буква г всегда передается, независимо от того, произносится ли она. Cardif- Кардиф.

4. Непроизносимые буквы I (перед k), t (перед I), p (перед b), b (конечное после т) при транскрибировании передаются: Folkestone /bukstan/ - Фолькстон: Campbell /'kasmbal/ - Кэмпбелл. Whistle /Visl/ - Уистл. (остальные немые буквы не передаются, например. Knoxville- Ноксвилл.

Калькирование - это перевод по частям английского слова (или словосочетания), например, misinformation - дезинформация, sky-blue - небесно-голубой, day's pay дневная заработная плата, newly-born новорожденный. Калькированию обычно подвергаются термины, географические названия, названия историко-культурных объектов, титулы и звания, названия учебных заведений, государственных учреждений, музеев и т. п.
