Может быть, не совсем понятно, куда ставить отрицание в повелительном наклонении. Мы знаем, что отрицательная частица not ставится после альфы, и в прямой речи все проходит гладко:

Но если мы начнем переводить прямую речь в косвенную, никакой альфы там не будет по той простой причине, что глагол будет стоять в инфинитиве:

Не told me to go there.

Значит, наше правило о постановке not после альфы здесь не проходит. Но на такой случай есть и другое правило, а именно: если отрицается инфинитив, то отрицательная частица not¹ ставится прямо перед ним:

Не told me not to go there.
